Binance Review: How Maker and Taker Pricing Plays Out on Real Orders
A review of how Binance applies maker and taker rates in practice, including where the Post Only option sits, how to confirm which rate a fill used, and when market orders make sense.

Reviews of Binance tend to quote the headline trading rate and move on. In everyday use, the more interesting question is why one order of yours cost less than another of the same size. The answer is the maker and taker model. Whether an order adds liquidity to the book or removes it decides which rate applies, and Binance gives you tools to control that. This review looks at those tools from the point of view of an ordinary spot trader rather than a high-volume desk.
How Binance decides which rate you pay
A taker order matches immediately against orders already waiting in the book, and every market order is a taker. A maker order sits in the book until someone else trades against it. Binance publishes both rates for every VIP level on its trading fee page, along with any adjustment for paying in BNB. The page highlights your own level when you are logged in, which is the only figure worth using in your calculations.
The Post Only option
On the spot order form, choose Limit, then open the options next to the time-in-force setting and tick Post Only, sometimes labelled Maker Only. With it switched on, Binance rejects the order instead of letting it fill as a taker if the price would match immediately. It is a simple way to make sure you only pay the maker rate. The trade-off is that a rejected order needs repricing, and in a fast market you may miss the move.
Confirm what each fill actually cost
Open Orders, then Trade History. Each fill shows the fee charged and the asset it was paid in, and the role column marks it as maker or taker. Comparing a few of your own trades here is more honest than any calculator. If a limit order shows taker, its price crossed the spread when placed, which is common when people set a limit at or beyond the current best price.
Verdict for everyday users
For occasional buyers the difference is small, and convenience may win. For anyone trading weekly, learning limit orders with Post Only is the single easiest cost improvement Binance offers. Check the fee page for your current level before drawing conclusions, since rates and discounts are revised over time.

Scenario checkpoint
- Open the Binance trading fee page while logged in and note your highlighted VIP level.
- Tick Post Only on limit orders when paying the maker rate matters more than speed.
- Check the maker or taker role on each fill in Trade History after the order completes.
- Recheck the BNB fee payment setting so your expected discount is actually applied.
